QUINTON VAN DER BURGH
South African born Quinton Van Der Burgh has spent more than a decade building an empire with his instincts for marketing and mergers. He has applied his business development knowledge across a wide variety of disciplines, from the automotive, telecoms, import and export industries to property development, industry, trading and mining. A true maverick, he not only heads up family-owned investment company Burgh Group Holdings, but has also channeled his passion for the entertainment industry into producing a number of reality TV shows.
Van Der Burgh started out in marketing in 1995 for Leznin, where he eventually headed up the marketing division and became a shareholder. Accepting an offer to take over as MD of a telecom car-phone distributor in London in 1999, he left South Africa. Within six months the young firestarter merged two telecom companies and formed a marketing division that he would subsequently own. He managed this new company, Voda-Telle International, for five years and under his leadership it grew to trade in over 12 countries. Still only twenty something, he started up a succession of successful businesses before he was offered the responsibility to head the company Burgh Group Holdings. He was appointed to the board in 2004 and is now a major shareholder and CEO of the company.
Burgh Group Holdings mines coal under its own licenses and is constantly exploring the Mpumalanga region of South Africa for new reserves and opportunities. It is a large supplier of coal to Eskom and to the export market, owning six mines and three blending and washing facilities. They mine effectively where others have failed because they’re debt free, Van Der Burgh says, and use their own equipment division to curb overheads.
Small blocks of coal that were first mined about 100 years ago still contain good deposits that efficient miners can extract economically. “We’re mining old reserves that have problems like acidic water and fires,” Van Der Burgh says. “We clean up those operations, close them efficiently, and rehabilitate the land.”
Burgh Group Holdings is one of the most aggressive coal companies in SA. “We took a view when the coal market was at its worst that the market would correct,” says Van Der Burg. “We’ve grown a nice portfolio. We’ve had over 500% growth in the last six months (2016). There’s still a big market for coal out there,” he says. “In South Africa, in India and in China.”
To establish his foothold in the entertainment world, in 2009 Van Der Burgh founded Quinton Van Der Burgh Media, a media company focused on entertainment & content creation in both the digital and broadcast arenas such as reality-based television, format development and long form feature film. The company is devoted to finding, developing and producing original scripted and non-scripted programming. One such show was Sharp Shooter, a competitive reality show focused on the world of photography. Sharp Shooter aired in South Africa in 2010. This was followed in 2012 by Clifton Shores, a reality show revolving around the glamorous world of A-list eventing and set on Cape Town’s millionaire’s row, Clifton. The Shores which was then launched in 2015 was a follow on from Clifton Shores and received great praise locally and internationally. In 2016 a personal interest in fitness and mixed martial arts led the entrepreneur to create a new sports platform with a reality show component attached to it, Last Fighter Standing pitted combatants from varying fighting styles against each other in a grueling competition to be the true – Last Fighter Standing, the show boasted nb1 ratings from the very 1st episode. In 2017 the entrepreneur shares the screen with industry heavy weights to discover Africa’s greatest Innovator in a global first in interactive, immersive entertainment, Hangman which airs later this year.
